The prohibition of the use of force concerns a state's right to use force in a conflict with one or more states. The general principle is that there is a prohibition against threats or use of force against another or several states. The prohibition is codified in Article 2, paragraph 4 of the UN Charter. The prohibition includes threats of - or use of - force against another state's territory and political independence. However, the prohibition does not cover political or economic power. This means, for example, that economic sanctions against another state are not covered by the prohibition. Furthermore, the prohibition does not regulate a state's use of force against its own population.
